Report: Motorola, Verizon Working on Android TV Tablet

Posted By admin On Thursday, August 5th 2010   In Android News  Tags: Android, cliq, fios, google, ipad, research in motion, sanjay jha, tv content, Verizon

Reports surfaced late Tuesday night that Motorola is looking to enter the tablet game, becoming the next company to enter the space currently dominated by Apple’s iPad.

If the rumors prove true, the handset manufacturer would be the latest high-profile company to try its hands at a slate, following forthcoming devices from Hewlett-Packard, Asus , Dell, Samsung, Toshiba, and Sony—to name but a few.

According to the Financial Times, the device will include a 10-inch screen and run Google’s Android, the mobile operating system at least partially responsible for changing the fortunes of the struggling Motorola, through devices like T-Mobile’s Cliq and Verizon’s Droid and Droid X.

Motorola is reportedly working with Verizon once again. The rumored tablet is expected to be tied to Verizon’s FiOS service, with a focus on TV content. As the Times points out, Motorola is also the manufacturer behind Verizon’s FiOS set-top boxes.

Word of an Android-based Motorola tablet first surfaced back in May, when Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha told the press, “We’re very focused on participating in this convergence between mobility and home, and I actually think you will see some products from us in a very short period of time.”

Motorola is reportedly readying the device for release “as early as this autumn.” According to reports, it will be thinner than Apple’s iPad and will feature front- and back-facing cameras for photos and teleconferencing.

Yesterday, rumors also surfaced that fellow smartphone manufacturer Research in Motion is readying its own tablet for a November release.

For the first time on a mobile phone, true caller ID is available. No more guessing who’s on the other end of the line.

There have been more times than I can count where I’ve gotten a phone call and have had no clue who might be calling from the number alone. Mobile developer First Orion aims to change that with the release of an Android version of its app called PrivacyStar. For the first time on a mobile phone, true caller ID would be available. No more guessing who’s on the other end of the line.

PrivacyStar does more than just tell you whose calling – it will also Read the rest of this entry »

Google: Nearly 60% of Android devices now running 2.1

Google has published an updated breakdown of the number of active devices running a given version of its Android mobile operating system platform. According to the Platform Versions device dashboard on the Android Developer portal, nearly 60% of all Android devices in circulation are now running version 2.1 of the OS – up almost 10% compared to mid-June (50%). Android 1.5 and 1.6 devices now make up 15.3% and 20.3% of devices respectively, while only 0.2% of devices are running obsolete versions, including version 1.1, 2.0 and 2.0.1.

Hands On: Facebook 1.3.0 for Android

Posted By admin On Thursday, August 5th 2010   In Android News  Tags: Android, app, facebook, google, gripes, ios, news feed, notifications, settings screen

Facebook released a new version of their Android app on Wednesday, and I’ve spent about 24 hours with the new version 1.3.0. There’s really no reason to not upgrade to it, but here are a couple of things I’ve noticed so far.

The new app looks like the official Twitter app, especially the settings screen and the bar on top of the home screen. Google is probably working closely with the two companies, as these are both “official” apps with ties to the OS.

In general, it’s faster than previous iterations. Messages seem to Read the rest of this entry »

Smartphones running Google’s Android software were the top seller among consumers in the United States in the second quarter, industry tracker NPD said on Wednesday.

Android accounted for one-third of all smartphones purchased in the April-June period, with Research In Motion’s BlackBerry sliding to second place for the first time since 2007.

BlackBerry lost nine percentage points of market share, falling to 28 per cent.

Apple Inc.’ s iPhone was in third place with a 22 per cent share.

Android is available on smartphones from a number of different manufacturers.

NPD said Motorola’s Droid was the bestselling Android handset in the second quarter among U.S. consumers.

Google said recently that 160,000 Android phones were activated each day during the second quarter, up from 65,000 in the first quarter.

13 ways to make your Android phone’s battery last longer

By Gary Cutlack

Improve your Android phone’s battery life with these tips

Let’s be honest – many mobile phone batteries simply aren’t fit for purpose. Even Google’s Larry Page says you should be grateful if your Android battery lasts a day.

In fact, in order to keep your smartphone alive for a full “working” day you’re often forced to deactivate the very features that make the phone “smart” to begin with, as you switch off option after option to nurse your rapidly-dying new mobile through a day of worthwhile use.

So what can be done, practically speaking, to make your Android phone’s battery last longer? And can any of the power-management apps actually help?

Here we’ll look at the more obvious Android battery-saving solutions, as well as the more obscure tips and tricks that could make a genuine difference – and add hours to your potential operational ‘up time’.

1. Widgetise your on/off switches

Put simply, you’ve got to take control. The best way of Read the rest of this entry »

After months of breakneck development, Google’s Android team has succeeded in getting a slim majority of its users into the Android 2.0 world.

Google released usage statistics Thursday showing that 50.4 percent of all Android devices that accessed the Android Market in the past two weeks were running Android 2.0 or higher. Android 2.0 was released last October along with the Motorola Droid, which has become one of the best-selling Android devices yet released.

The numbers don’t necessarily reflect Read the rest of this entry »
