Google has published an updated breakdown of the number of active devices running a given version of its Android mobile operating system platform. According to the Platform Versions device dashboard on the Android Developer portal, nearly 60% of all Android devices in circulation are now running version 2.1 of the OS – up almost 10% compared to mid-June (50%). Android 1.5 and 1.6 devices now make up 15.3% and 20.3% of devices respectively, while only 0.2% of devices are running obsolete versions, including version 1.1, 2.0 and 2.0.1.

Hands On: Facebook 1.3.0 for Android

Posted By admin On Thursday, August 5th 2010   In Android News  Tags: Android, app, facebook, google, gripes, ios, news feed, notifications, settings screen

Facebook released a new version of their Android app on Wednesday, and I’ve spent about 24 hours with the new version 1.3.0. There’s really no reason to not upgrade to it, but here are a couple of things I’ve noticed so far.

The new app looks like the official Twitter app, especially the settings screen and the bar on top of the home screen. Google is probably working closely with the two companies, as these are both “official” apps with ties to the OS.

In general, it’s faster than previous iterations. Messages seem to Read the rest of this entry »

Android Invasion Has Begun: 200K Droids Activated Daily

Google Wave may be gone, but there are still reasons to rejoice in Googleville. One of them is the continuing good news about sales of smartphones running Google’s Android operating system. While the shock of Searchzilla’s announcement that it was driving a stake into the heart of its experiment in collaboration, its boss revealed to a gathering of reporters at Techonomy in Lake Tahoe, California that Android smartphone activations have reached 200,000 a day.

That’s an increase of more than 200 percent since over this year’s first quarter, when activations were around 65,000 a day. At 200,000 activations a day, one million Android phones would be sold every five days, six million every 30 days and from August 1 to the end of the year, 30 million new handsets would be in consumers’ hands.

But that’s if sales remain static at 200,000 a day. That hasn’t been the case all year. Just two months ago, sales were at 100,000 a day. One month later Read the rest of this entry »

Google Android phones No. 1 in U.S.

Posted By admin On Thursday, August 5th 2010   In Android News  Tags: Android, Auto, Draft, Droid, google, iPhone, NPD, percentage points, research in motion

Smartphones running Google’s Android software were the top seller among consumers in the United States in the second quarter, industry tracker NPD said on Wednesday.

Android accounted for one-third of all smartphones purchased in the April-June period, with Research In Motion’s BlackBerry sliding to second place for the first time since 2007.

BlackBerry lost nine percentage points of market share, falling to 28 per cent.

Apple Inc.’ s iPhone was in third place with a 22 per cent share.

Android is available on smartphones from a number of different manufacturers.

NPD said Motorola’s Droid was the bestselling Android handset in the second quarter among U.S. consumers.

Google said recently that 160,000 Android phones were activated each day during the second quarter, up from 65,000 in the first quarter.

Google’s Android was expected to become the world’s second most-used smartphone OS by 2012, after the Symbian OS, but now accelerating sales will help it get there this year, according to analysts.

Android was in fourth place during the first three months of 2010, trailing the Research In Motion (RIM) and Apple smartphone OSes by a margin of about 5 million and 3 million, according to market research company Gartner, which tracks the number of smartphones sold to end users.

However, since then sales have picked up Read the rest of this entry »
